Grids and layers
I just read an article over at A List Apart about the use of grid systems for design layout. Nothing terribly new here, but the graphic in the middle that showed the box model breakdown made me realize something else that perhaps wasn't stated so clearly in the article:
CSS allows the designer to work with layers as well as grids.
Designing in a grid system has its advantages for both the designer and the audience, while breaking out of the grid allows for the artistic side of the designer to be represented. Well, why not use them both? Create site designs in layered complementary grid systems. Rather than the single frame grid analyses of the sites shown below the page captures in the article, why not have layers of grid patterns that may overlap, fit together like puzzle pieces, or even contrast?
